Estate Tax and Extension of Tax Relief Act of 2006

109th Congress, 2nd Session

July 29, 2006

Another attempt to substantially reduce the estate tax was passed by the House on July 29, 2006, but a cloture vote later failed in the Senate. This bill was unusual in that the Republican leadership included an increase in the minimum wage along with substantial reduction of the estate tax. Most Democrats opposed the bill even with the inclusion of a provision they would support. Fewer Congressional Black Caucus members voted for this measure than had supported straight estate tax elimination of the estate tax in the past. The four CBC members who voted Aye are Bobby Rush (D-IL), William Jefferson (D-LA), Harold Ford (D-TN) and Edolphus Towns (D-NY).
